on

Did you know 23 million American children and teenagers are obese or overweight? Or that these kids are at risk for health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke and cancer? And the cost? More than 14 billion dollars a year in direct health care costs alone.

Clearly, our country has a major problem and Louie’s Kids, a national nonprofit that helps treat childhood obesity, is trying to educate the public and help fix the issue. September is the perfect time for the organization to up their efforts as this month is the 4th annual National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month (NCOAM), which calls attention and action to this growing epidemic

Louie’s Kids has partnered with Hewlett Packard to host a National Health Essay Contest, prompting middle and high school students to answer the question, “How will computers and the internet help me live a healthier lifestyle?” Winners will be awarded an HP Pavilion Notebook PC.

To submit an essay, kids simply go to LouiesKids.org and click “share your essay.” From there, all the essays will be evaluated by Louie’s Kids Board of Directors and winners will be announced in mid-October. Deadline for submission is Monday, Sept. 30.
