Leftovers: Tidbits from the Food & Bev Community (7/8/18)
I created the “Leftovers” series to ensure I could share as much food and bev news as possible, so here’s the latest:
- Home Team BBQ will make their debut at the Windy City Smokeout on July 13-15. In its sixth consecutive year, the Chicago, IL event continues to be the nation’s premier barbecue, country music, and beer festival. Home Team BBQ joins a line up of 20 of the nation’s best pitmasters, including long-time friends and fellow brisket lovers Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q out of Atlanta. For more information, visit: http://windycitysmokeout.com.
– Holy Smoke, a local olive oil, pepper, and honey purveyor, has welcomed a new, smoked bloody mary mix to its growing product line. Unlike many bloody mary mixes, the recipe uses no MSG, corn syrup, or artificial sweeteners with about half the sodium. The smoked bloody mary mix is now available in a 32 oz. bottle for $12 and can be purchased online, in a variety of specialty food stores, and Total Wine. In addition, co-owners Kyle and Max are active participants in the Charleston Farmers Market, which is held each Saturday from April to December at Marion Square.
- The City of North Charleston’s Cultural Arts Department is pleased to announce that South Carolina DHEC will be bringing the WIC mobile clinic to the North Charleston Farmers Market July 19 and 26 and September 20 and 27 from 3-6pm. The mission is to provide ease of access to all WIC services including WIC certifications, nutrition education, six-month infant evaluations, breast-feeding support, and voucher pick-ups. WIC vouchers may be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at any of the North Charleston Farmers Market farm stands, including Joseph Fields Farm, Robert Fields Farm, and Frank Simmons Farm. The 2018 North Charleston Farmers Market takes place every Thursday through October 25 from 3-7pm on the grounds of Felix C. Davis Community Center. Visitors enjoy fresh local produce, a featured food truck, a variety of vendors selling specialty foods as well as art and craft items, a free jump castle, and live musical entertainment from 5-7pm.
